Alternative Spring Break Saturday, March 29th, 2008 09:21:35 PM
Picture Hurricane Katrina, in August of 2005 tearing through New Orleans. What do you see? Houses damages, families displaced, a town in shambles all because of mother nature. Now picture that same place today. What do you see? Skyscrapers? Homes rebuilt? Bourbon Street bustling with college students and 45-year-olds alike, all traveling from bar to bar and live jazz music hot spot to another? All of this would be correct, if you combine what happened two years ago, the destruction that existed then, and the partial rebuilding that is happening now. New Orleans was the Spring Break destination to many athletes this last March. Football, soccer, and volleyball players joined forces with the runners of track and fielders of field (you know what I mean) along with other students from Miami University. Some were form Campus Crusade for Christ. Some athletes were from Athletes in Action (a Christian organization on campus) and some students just wanted to help. With light of these type of "alternative" spring breaks in may newspapers, it probably is no surprise to you that over 120 students traveled by car the 15 some odd hours to spend a week rebuilding, piecing together, and establishing new friendships. My group for the week consisted of 9 girls and 1 boy (lucky duck); two athletes, 5 sorority sisters (from two different sororities) and 3 Campus Crusaders. None of us knew one another too well. Our first two days we spent at Lake Pontchartrain State Park. We traveled the 25-mile long bridge connecting New Orleans to this little community where the park was located. We ended up planting different kinds of trees, mostly Oak, in a park where 80% of the tree coverage was lost. Imagine a canopy of trees, so thick that when on the ground looking up, the sky is not visible. Now imagine yourself as a 5'4" individual, looking up 4 years later at miles and miles of sky where trees once stood. During the week, with everyone planting all 4 days we were working, we planted over 25,000 trees (I called them twigs) with the hope that some would grow up into big, strong oaks. Our last two days were spent in neighborhoods, going door-to-door asking if people needed help. We worked with the organization called Crossroads, however we were more free to converse with people living in these neighborhoods. Get to know the families and their stories. One of the days there, I think Wednesday, a small group of us went to the lower 9th ward, where the levees broke and houses were absolutely demolished. It was amazing to see a place that once was a populous neighborhood is now a field of grass with the occasional cement foundation, occasional porch steps leading to where a house should stand but instead weeds and grass grow tall. Standing on the new levee looking over this quiet land was such an eye-opening experience. I took the rise of traveling into one of the houses (sorry Mom I was compelled to). This house from the front still stood, a little off the foundation, but looked OK. Moving around the back we found that the entire back of the house had been ripped off, showing a living room, bathroom, and kitchen in shambles. The front door on the other side of the house was conveniently opened for us. Taking a step inside the house, the moldy floorboards creaked underneath my weight. Surveying the scene, the residents of the house clearly had not been back since the devastating hurricane years prior. Shoes were thrown everywhere, furniture musty and old flopped over and flipped upside down, dolls were thrown about the house making it clear that children were present here. Dry cleaning still hung in the closet, or at least plastic covered clothes. I picked up an address book and agenda book that still had legible writing in it. The shock of this hurricane will probably never be able to be explained to someone like me. Even years later, experiencing the X's on the outside of houses explaining who checked the house, how many bodies were found, and the date of the check still bring tears to my eyes. The people that still live in tents under the highways near Canal Street and near downtown are the story. The houses that have been left with a lifetime of stories in them are the story. The simple matter that the levees broke is sad and probably angers so many people, but the story is not in the cement walls of the levees. It is in the faces in the pictures of the people who lost loved ones. It is the stories you hear of people whose houses are scheduled for demolition. The people you are helping who are willing to share their side of the story. Their personal recollection of that horrid day. New Orleans is regaining spirit, it is regaining passion, and it is regaining a community. It is nowhere near being rebuilt. It is being patched together, stitch by stitch, by alternative spring breakers, organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Crossroads, by the residents who call this home and are willing to put the sweat and the time into recreating what once was. Next time you think you have it hard, really look at the situation. So often we complain about school, homework, soccer practice, the 10x100, the cooper, lifting, the boy/girl friend not being fair, the car not starting, your workday being extended by 2 hours. People say, "it is the worst" when describing a situation. I urge you to ask yourself...is it really the worst? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
The River Miami Wednesday, February 6th, 2008 08:49:05 PM
This morning students did not awake to sunny skies and birds chirping. They woke up to lightning, thunder, and a flooded central quad. Not only that, but some basements were filled with water and leaving the dorms this morning was out of the question unless you wanted to wade through a foot of water. For some of us, that would be up to our ankles, for me that would be pretty much up to my waist. Luckily, the dorm that I live in is located on somewhat of a hill and therefore, the water stayed on the sidewalk and on the grass. It is weird still, a thunderstorm in the beginning of February. Usually you would expect snow, ice, even sleet but to wake up in the middle of the night to a clash of thunder..it is still something new to me. Spring lifting has not changed and is not one of the teams’ favorite activities to do; however playing outside every now and again is nice, weather permitting. Other than that, girls are staying plenty busy with homework and sorority stuff, along with an intramural basketball team that is the best thing that this school has ever seen. Enjoy your week, stay dry if it is raining where you are, warm if it is cold from where you are, and whatever other weather related activities I am not accounting for. Thank you Mom. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
MLK Day... Monday, January 21st, 2008 01:01:43 PM
As the Miami University as a whole takes a break for MLK day, I thought I would update everyone on the activities of the Soccer team. We have started Spring lifting, which will lead to jeans being too big around the waist yet somehow way too tight around the thighs (thank you Matt Cady for your help with this) and shirts that once fit our arms now bursting at the seams. What we have to look forward to.. On another note, everyone made it back safely from break and survived their first week of school, lifting (which all of last week was spent doing MAX testing), conditioning (already we have run a cooper..thanks Bobby), and sleep deprivation. We have yet to start training outside since it is too cold here to do so at the moment. Today as a team we attended the MLK Rally/March in Uptown Park. Here we listened to Motivational speakers while standing out in the cold, occasionally reading from the program. This is an interesting day since people on campus that usually don't intermingle too much get together for one cause and celebrate a great person in history. The march is particularly interesting as marchers come across different choirs of Miami University and of the Oxford community (local churches, etc.) who have prepared songs, gospel numbers, or inspirational pieces for marchers to enjoy. Stay warm, here it is 26 degrees however back home in Minnesota they are sitting on a lovely average temp of -2 with wind chills rising up into the -20's. For all you Packers fans (aka Grandma and Grandpa), I apologize for the loss last night. For all you Patriots fans...don't even get me started. Hopefully the start of your week goes well. Try to stay warm.. Thank you Mom . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
'Tis the Season Wednesday, December 26th, 2007 01:00:14 AM
Before the holiday is officially over, I would like to wish everyone who celebrates it a very Merry Christmas. In Minnesota/Wisconsin today, during a late lunch/Christmas dinner, my eyes wandered to looking out the window (as they often do when certain subjects of conversation arise at the table) and noticed the light, huge snowflakes falling down outside. Truly a white christmas! Now, being a child that asks for one every year and usually is not satisfied...this year I was quite the happy camper. I hope/wish everyone safe travels if you are not at home, and a very relaxing next few days. Thank you Mom . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Holiday Cheer Saturday, December 15th, 2007 09:50:24 PM
Imagine this: It is a Saturday morning, you wake up and already your day is planned out for you. To get anywhere, you must be with an attendant of the building. All doors are locked and only attendants have keys. You have a gym with donated equipment; rollerblades, lacrosse sticks, soccer balls, exercise balls, footballs, and basketballs. In the game room, there is an old basketball shooting arcade game, an air-hockey table, a newly donated pool table, and a large TV. The stereo plays kid-edited versions of the “hip songs of today” and there is a cabinet filled with board games and toys with which to play. Truly one must think that this sounds pretty good for a young child. However, these children do not experience the simple joys that I did growing up. The hugs and the “I love you’s” and the warm house to return home to and parents and a brother greeting you at the door. These are children at an orphanage. It’s still Saturday morning, however this day is unlike other Saturday’s. This Saturday, a group of athletes from Miami University, dressed in their Nike athletic gear, brand name jeans, comfy shoes and warm socks, hats, mittens, and scarves with a nice puffy coat to top if off head to an orphanage. However, these young adults are members of Athletes in Action, a Christian group at Miami University. These students got out of their cars at the orphanage in Colrain, OH on Saturday morning with undecorated cookies, sprinkles, frosting, hundreds of stockings with various needed items, and different things to do with the children that day. There were two units, the crisis unit and the other unit. The crisis unit had children ages 8-16 or so who had been through some things that you and I probably will never experience. The other unit had children ages 10-16, most of the children we played with were ages 10-13 or so. Throughout the day we played soccer, basketball, rollerbladed around the gym, started a game of kickball and after that we moved to decorating sugar cookies shaped like stars and Christmas trees, singing and dancing to music, and playing various games. The joy in those children’s eyes, although it may have been from the amount of sugar we brought them that day, will replace any Christmas gift I receive this year. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Slacking...BIG TIME Friday, November 30th, 2007 09:25:07 PM
Well...Here I am two months (or something like that) posting another blog. I apologize for the amount of time that has lapsed since my last entry. Life has been a little...chaotic to put it lightly. For you parents who are not aware, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at the end of August. Being the true mother and fan that she is, she continued to attend games, take her lovely daughter on the team out to dinner and forever supported me from the Arctic circle of Minnesota. Since then she has had three surgeries, two lumpectomies which biopsies concluded were unsuccessful and one final double mastectomy just this last Wednesday morning, the 28th. For those of you who share the pain of this disease, or simply of having a loved one struggling from afar, I share in your pain and wish you the best. However, the one thing that has kept me going is the support system I have at Miami. The girls on the team, my friends both at school and at home, relatives, everyone has just been absolutely amazing and accommodating toward the needs of my family and me. This has been such a blessing as people have offered to pick up homework assignments, since I am away from school this weekend, send cards and stuffed animals, be a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on, everything and really I could not ask for better people than the ones here at Miami and my friends and family in Minnesota. She is at home as of this afternoon, recovering nicely though very, very sore. She is still on some pain killers, which can make conversation much more interesting and lively until the eyelids start getting heavy, but nonetheless I am truly blessed to have this woman in my life as I am sure all the girls on the team think of their respective mothers as well. For those of you hating me for not giving a final prognosis, the final pathology report was given today with no signs of invasive cancer left in her body: no chemo, no radiation, all signs are clear. :) Other than that, Minnesota is expecting a huge snowstorm this weekend, well not that huge but 6-10 inches from Saturday morning to Sunday morning. I am so excited to be home for this since Ohio has failed to offer a real winter thus far... I hope that all is well with everyone and that the approaching holiday seasons (all holidays included) go smoothly for all parties. Thank you Mom, and everyone else for being there, whenever needed. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Middle of the road Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 12:32:52 PM
Mid-Season is approaching, fast for some and slowly for others, and I have realized that we have been here forever it seems! Since August, we have played soccer everyday (with our day off on Tuesday) and most if not all of us trained this summer and worked out this summer and played soccer this summer. Thinking about the fact that my body has been under constant stress and strain of working out and playing soccer since I was the age of walking--I am curious how much longer any of our bodies will hold together for us. Weird thought to be thinking when you are 19, 20, 21 years old and I bet most of you reading this are going to find me at the next game and hit me upside the head for even mentioning the fact that my body is getting old faster than I wish it to. On a lighter note, fall finally hit Oxford today. It's about 60 degrees right now and interesting to think that I used to think that 60's equated to shorts and a t-shirt weather. Now I am walking around in jeans and a sweatshirt...not doing Minnesota too proud am I? Mid-Terms are upon us students here at Miami as well, so if you have not spoken with your child in a while, that is probably why. One more week of chaos and all should be smooth sailing until finals, at least I would like to think so. We are finally done with our away trips for a while as we find ourselves back at home for two consecutive weekends, this coming weekend and fall break weekend. Sorry parents, if you want to see your child for fall break she is not coming home so you might just have to come and watch a game or two that weekend! With that being said, I pray that you all have a wonderful and safe week. Enjoy the fall weather and the changing of the leaves and all that lovely stuff and have fun at work/school! Thank you Mom(s)--we'll start to incorporate other mom's into this thanking at the end. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Inability to type... Thursday, September 20th, 2007 11:33:17 PM
and if you could not figure out that last p.s. it meant to say and my lovely roommate here is Jaclyn Levant :) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Comfy?!!!!!!! Thursday, September 20th, 2007 11:27:51 PM
So the bus ride to Michigan was fun, I do not know who wouldn't want to be in a bus for about 5 hours--doing Geology homework. But we rode to good ol' Michigan to challenge the Michigan Wolverines Womens Soccer team to a 90 minute contest...on their turf. Speaking with team captain, Jaclyn Levant aka Abbie Kaul (#11 from Butler University who Jaclyn apparently was in our latest Miami Student...the journalist screwed up big time..look at the website www.miamistudent.net to find out more), this is a game that "we need to win for ourselves". I mean come on, how great would it be if a MAC team, for the 3rd time, beat a Big 10 team on their home turf? I must say that has a nice ring to it. On a lighter note, these beds in this hotel are amazing. I am not going to do advertising for the hotel, so the name will remain anonymous however these are literally the BEST beds I have been in...or maybe it is the roommate that makes this experience worthwhile...you make the decision. That is all for now, more sarcasm and information to come later :) Thank you Mom P.S. If you could not figure it out, Jaclyn is my roommate here is lovely Jaclyn Levant . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
What spare time? Wednesday, August 29th, 2007 12:33:51 PM
I was just strolling along the slant-walk here at Miami University the other day when I overheard some girls complaining, rather loudly may I add. They were complaining about how their outfit did not look right and their hair being out of place and nonsense like that and then I heard it. Probably the best comment I have ever heard in my life and by best I mean worst. Girl number 1 says to Girl number 2, "Do you ever have a problem finding stuff to fill your day?" Girl number 2: "Yeah, it seems like all I do is go to class, do homework, and sit around. I have so much free time I do not even know what to do with it." This simply disgusted me. So much free time that you do not know what to do with it. Ha..sometimes I wish I had that luxury as I am sure we all do at some point in time, I mean who doesn't like to just sit on the Lovesac (or couch if you are not in Jarman and I's room) every once-in-a-while? However, to have to much of it on a campus like ours where there is bound to be something going on, if not multiple things at the same time, all hours of the day, is just unacceptable. Yes, ALL HOURS OF THE DAY. Thought/advice of the day: Do not waste your time sitting around unless you are taking a nap or watching a really really good TV show or you are reading a book or I suppose doing homework...OK point being do not just sit around and do nothing please :) Thank you MOM and Bobby and Ellen and Shane and Matt and Misao...without you we too would have no idea what to do with our free time. :) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Bumps and Bruises Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007 09:43:14 PM
With preseason well over with now and school underway, sleep deprivation is setting in. As for the team, we are all walking zombies..Well OK not really but this weekend was quite a tiring one. We headed off on Thursday afternoon for about a 7-hour bus ride to West Virginia where we proceeded to stay that night and then travel 2 hours to Virginia Tech for a scrimmage. Although we lost, we gained important knowledge to better ourselves for the season to come. Then the real fun began. We went Whitewater Rafting from Saturday through Sunday evening. Day one we all floated down the river in duckies, inflatable kayaks that fit two people. Stephanie Laser and I were in a kayak together and have no fear; we set the bar high by falling out and tipping our kayak during the first rapid. Oh, and we lost a paddle so we were left with one paddle. :) So much fun! We camped on Saturday night outside, with the bonfire and the bears and the bugs and the amazing bonding that happened during the trip. The second day we were in larger rafts and hit the higher-class rapids, although not too large because the river was so low but it still was an amazing experience. We finished the trip with a climb and team picture near a waterfall that flows into the river (complete with a natural waterslide; a moss and rock slide). This week, school started, classes are already taking a toll on my social time (thanks profs) and my bed is looking more and more amazing as time goes on. We will play at Wright State University near Dayton this Friday and continue practicing toward a MAC championship. That’s all for now. I hope this blog finds you way less tired than I :) Thank you Mom! Oh and p.s. Those of you that know Jaclyn Levant at all know that she is the peach of the team...always bruising. Well her legs are two huge black and blue objects that are attached to the rest of her body. Along with that I think we all have odd bruises on our arms from rowing our rafts this weekend. Don't you all wished you played Division 1 soccer? Have a wonderful rest of the week. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
3-a-days are so much fun Wednesday, August 15th, 2007 09:44:19 AM
Well, we are underway here at Miami for preseason 07' and I have to say that it is going much better than last year. Maybe because I know what to expect and I am actually not too sore from it...yet. The freshman seem to be enjoying it, although they, on top of 3-a-days, need to go get blood work done plus a concussion test. Our two lovely Swedish girls needed to take an English test yesterday which took up two hours of their day so keeping busy is not too hard at the current time. Other than that, it has not been too hot (knock on wood) and practices have been tolerable. The room, do not worry parents, is finally set up and yes you can even see the floor. My roommate and I have a Lovesac in our room, which for those of you that do not know what that is, is a giant bean bag sac with foam instead of 'beans' which is currently taking up about 1/4 of the room--so worth it though! As rooms finally start getting settled, more and more people are starting to show up on campus which is exciting but it means that school is actually about to start which to most is not so exciting. That is all for now but I hope that the rest of summer is treating you well and the rest of the week does the same. Thank you Mom. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Done already? Wednesday, August 8th, 2007 10:35:56 PM
Although summer is coming to an end, I cannot help but feel a bit relieved to go back to Oxford. I wil miss my family I think more than I realize and miss Minnesota and all its snowy coldness, but getting back to friends and soccer back at school is something I think we all are looking forward to. I kind of wish my stuff would just pack itself however. The next couple days go as following-- The team will be arriving in Oxford on Friday or Saturday Unpacking and moving in and getting settled (if that is possible within the first month of school) will start on Saturday Team meetings and physicals and parents meetings and who could forget the amazing 10X100 on Sunday 3-a-days start Monday morning with the other wonderful fitness test, the Cooper test. We'll then play soccer more in a week than I think some people have all summer long. School starts the 20th...and fall is underway in the end of August...there is just something wrong with that sentence! I hope that this summer has been a memorable one for all and there have been enough sun burns and sand in shoes to last a while. Enjoy the last couple of days girls, Bobby, Ellen, and Shane and for those of you that have more than a couple of days...don't take them for granted!! Take care and thank you Mom! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Summer...Had Me a Blast (so far) Wednesday, July 18th, 2007 09:48:54 PM
With less than a month left until school and soccer once again start, I find myself wondering where my summer went. Since last time we spoke (I spoke, you read) lots has happened. A few of us ended up at Lauren Jarman's in Michigan for the 4th of July..a few freshman soccer players and a couple of volleyball players at Miami :) and it was wonderful to see people again and finally discover where she lives. Birmingham, MI, though right outside of Detroit, is a cute litte place to live. Since then...I just returned from New York City, where a group of 8 of us (friends from high school) attended the last ever Dispatch concert. For those of you who do not know who Dispatch is, they were an acoutsic rock type of band. The wonderful thing about this concert was that 100% of the profit went toward Project Zimbabwe, one that the band supports and cannot wait to be dedicate more of their time to. Returning from that trip was rough though. We got to NYC on Friday night and stayed with some realitives of one of my friends and took in the entire city (OK not the ENTIRE city) but most of it in two days. I think I got about 10 hours of sleep total...that is about what I get in one night--but it was well worth it. For those of you that know what the USA Cup is, that is going on right now so Minnesota, particularly Blaine, is bustling with people. The two girls that I nanny played Sweden and Ireland yesterday and since they were in my care, I had the opportunity to go and watch. Big change from when I was 13 and 14 and we played the neighboring cities in Minnesota and Iowa. And of course, this week is the hottest week yet in Minnesota with temps reaching near 95 and 100 everyday. I hope all is well with everyone as summer nears an end. Enjoy your week and we will hear from one another soon. Thank you Mom! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Toes in the Sand Tuesday, June 26th, 2007 04:55:39 PM
Well it has been a long while since I have written and to be honest, not a lot has happened. Sorry to disappoint you, however this is what little has happened. I just returned from the Region II tournament in Des Moines, Iowa where my U19 team did alright, not the best not the worst but did hold the national champions from last year to a tie game until about the last ten minutes. Grr...Anyway, I walked away from that tournament with my first concussion thank you some girls elbow hitting the back of my head while the ball from the header (which thank you Bobby and Matt Cady I won) hit the front of my head. Intesresting black out moment and parts of the first half are returning to my memory but unfortunately not a ton of it is returning or has returned yet! Other than that, I am awaiting my teams response from my e-mail I sent out, but it is summer so I am not blaming anyone or pointing any fingers! I heard from a few..Lauren Jarman is enjoying her W-League team as they are traveling and playing many teams from different places as well as enjoying work as a hostess at a local restaurant. Sara Howland is also playing on a W-League team as well as taking calculus (ick) and babysitting which is consuming most of her time! As for our other goalie Krista Pace, she is living away from home playing for a W-League team as well and coaching young goalkeepers (poor kids!..only kidding Pace). In her words, just for Ellen I would like to add, she is also running track ladders and would like to point out that although she is from Canada, is has been above 90 degrees since early May...you can choose whether or not to believe her! Jackie Hardek is working at Dubois Bookstore in Oxford and taking classes, as well as working out. She so far this summer has visited Mammoth Caves National Park in Kentucky. As for Danielle Hays, she's lifting and running and playing soccer to keep her busy. She also attends Physics which according to her is pure evil. On June 26th, she will attend the Ben Folds/John Mayer concert, of which I am extremely jealous!! My future suitemate Jaclyn Levant is also in Oxford this summer with a few others working out and running...she is working her way back from a bad ankle injury from early in spring season. Her twin brother will be getting married July 14th, so from now to then she's helping out with that as much as possible! Jenny Rush, Courtney Elsen and Steph Wilson also find themselves in Oxford this summer, working and working out and taking classes! Stephanie Laser is spending her summer at her lakehouse in Fontana, Wisconsin-a charming little town in the middle of nowhere if I do say so myself. A visit there a weekend or two ago found myself missing Miami people much more than I realized! She spends her time working at the Bait Shop, a little restaurant as well as water skiing and tubing! I hope this summer has been well to everyone thus far and that you are not working too hard with whatever it is you wish to accomplish this summer! Many weeks left, so do not start stressing about fall quite yet! Enjoy the beginning of your week! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Summer Sun Thursday, June 7th, 2007 07:35:22 PM
Contrary to the title, such thing has been absent in Minnesota for some time. We have had storms and cloudy days with occasional sun. For those of you that think Minnesota is constantly full of snow, you are simply wrong and the sun will shine here one of these days. Other than that, I have been lifting and training here and there and enjoying the time home with the family. A few girls are visiting/visited those staying in Oxford as we speak or earlier this week and from what I hear it is good to see everyone again! Those who are at home are enjoying working and hanging out with the hometown 'crew' and some are even enjoying wonderful summer weather. Although I hope this post finds you enjoying your summer, whether it has just begun and you have just graduated, summer has just begun and you have a few more years, or work is your plan this summer--I hope that those of you that need to be training and working out...are. Bobby just sent out a lovely e-mail explaining that there are only 60 some odd days left until the amazing thing that is pre-season and every day counts. On that note, go out and enjoy the lakes (if you have them, they are plentiful in Minnesota so just give me a ring if you would like to go out on one of them sometime), enjoy the beach, enjoy the sun and time with those you love! For now, Thank you Mom. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Quickly... Sunday, May 20th, 2007 01:56:37 PM
I do not know about anyone else..especially if you do not live in Minnesota like I do, however it is about 47 degrees here and I am cold! This is not summer...this is barley what our winter in Oxford was like for a while...and I notice thank you to weather.com that it is sunny and 75 degrees in Oxford, Ohio. Please note that I am not from Canada like some people and we Minnesotans actually enjoy our usually +90 degree every day summer. That will come sometime soon right? Just thought I'd throw that fact out there...enjoy the rest of your weekend! P.S. It just randomly started pouring and thunderstorming....gotta love Minnesota! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
It's Been Awhile Friday, May 18th, 2007 12:31:47 PM
Well, I think now that Bobby is probably ready to kill me for not writing on this for a while and of course since I have deprived the people of Miami Soccer of news and happenings, here they are. We all made it home/into our households wherever they may be safely and with most if not all of the stuff we originally started the school year with (for most of us it was more, but that is OK). For me this summer has entailed moving, moving, and more moving. We are finally getting out of our old house, kind of, and moving most of our stuff into the new house that my family has bought. Summer weather here in Minnesota is surprisingly warmer than it is in Oxford. I do not know about anyone else, but I'm sick of this kind of cold summer stuff going on. Bring on the sun and the heat. It is weird, most of my friends from home are not here yet, some are, but most are still in school for a week or two (I know strange since we are 2 weeks done already!) Shows you the difference between Ohio and Minnesota. Other than that, I have talked to most of the girls on the team and all seem to be enjoying their summers. Women's League soccer is starting up for most and will be in full swing soon. My summer club team has started practice in preperation for State Cup and Women's League I think is scheduled to start at the end of May. Other than that, I plan to enjoy the sun and the time I have before nannying starts. I suggest you do the same! Oh yes and of course Bobby, we all have been diligently following our lifting schedule. :) For those of you still in school, hang in there the end is near. If you are not looking forward to the end, well then you might need to get something checked but have no fear you have a little under a month left, still tons of time to do some learning. I hope everyone is enjoying the May that has bestowed itself upon us and I will write soon! Thank you Mom. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
12 hours, lots of pavement, and way too much construction=HOME Thursday, May 3rd, 2007 10:53:55 PM
Well we're done, its all over, and we have done it! All the nights up late studying and all the nights out having a blast with friends to the nights we had to be supporting friends we have done it! Our first year is done and our first summer is about to begin! I hope you enjoyed your first night of summer! Weird to think that this year ia already done...even more weird to think I'm a sophomore in college, and yet even more weird to start the work that I will be doing all summer long!! This summer, I plan to keep you updated on things going on in and around Oxford, things the team is doing, things I am doing here in Minnesota, and just random comments here and there! I start coaching this Saturday for children first grade to fifth grade (kind of like M League all over again except with +500 kids!), I'll be nannying for my lovely girls that I have nannied for about 6 or 7 years, and I will be enjoying time with my friends. Let's not forget the lovely French class I am taking at the University of Minnesota! Should be a good time, though I already miss everyone at Miami and I have only been gone about 14 hours. 12 hours spent on the road today plus the two I have been home for. Weird to be home, good weird, but weird nonetheless!! I hope the ending of your week and start of your weekend brings nothing but sunshine, maybe a little sunburn, and good times! THANK YOU MOM! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
I'm Almost a Sophomore? Thursday, April 26th, 2007 09:42:35 PM
Grey's Anatomy is on the TV, two volleyball girls, a friend of all of ours, and three soccer players fill Jarman and Laser's room and we all realize that, in less than a week for most of us, our freshman year of our college career will be over. It seems like yesterday that we were standing out in the dark at 6:15 in the morning, waiting for our rides to the field for our first session of pre-season. Now, we sit here surrounded by boxes and bins waiting to be packed, getting ready to leave eachother for the first time for more than a month. We now look to summer visits, getting ready for the upcoming fall season, and jobs over the summer. WEIRD! Enough on that issue right now, it rained today! :) It rained a lot, kind of stormed, and oh yes half the girls of McFarland Hall found themselves outside from 5pm to about 8pm playing in the mud!! No, we never grow too old to play in the rain and the mud. Showering after that was interesting and do not forget, I am doing the laundry for all the girls that played outside today. So, that calls right now but I will write more sappy, emotional goodbye freshman year words at a later date. Until then, enjoy your Fridays as they should bring you happiness and hope for a wonderful weekend! THANK YOU MOM! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Ejected? Monday, April 23rd, 2007 12:36:18 PM
We finished our spring season against Indiana University and Wash U, and then Wednesday against Xavier. All games were played well, Wash U we needed a bit of work but all the other games were pretty decently played. However, it was in the first game that Jackie Hardeck was ejected for a foul that she really did not commit. Then, yours truly was ejected from the second game for kind of getting in a fight with a girl...enough said on that one just simply stated: it ended in both of us getting kicked out of the game for retaliation. Opps... Needless to say, Mom was at the games which I LOVED since I love her being there and she finally got to meet some of the people I constantly talk about and again, she got to see me play. I ended the day with a fat lip (still bruised a week and a half later) from a monster Indiana player whose elbows happened to land at my face level since I am a huge 5'3" tall...5'4" on a good day, an ejection, and a hug from my mother! :) Finals week is almost upon us, thank goodness!! One more week, finished up the last Monday as we speak right now, and then home next Wednesday. Kind of interesting and sad considering that I will not see any of the people I have come to love. I take that back, we all are planning trips this summer to see one another, but it won't be the same! Enough on that right now, enjoy the rest of your Monday and we will talk again soon..I promise before the week is out since I went on a no blogging spree for a bit! Thank you Mom! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Mumble Monday, April 9th, 2007 09:36:14 PM
Well, another trip home and another return, this time for the last time of my freshman year. It is kind of weird to think that my first year of college is almost over. We had a dessert senior recognition event at Millett Hall today and it kind of got me thinking about how fast things are going. I mean it seems like just yesterday, cliche I know, that I was just meeting these people that I call my teammates and closest friends at preseason, wondering how I would ever find myself in such a foreign place. Now I happily call this place home. WEIRD I know. Easter was good, packed up my room at home getting ready for the move my mom and I plan to make. The collective thought on the team seems to be that Easter was enjoyable, whether people stayed here or went home, and the relaxation of the weekend was much needed. Two more Monday's left, finals week, and we are done! Once again, scary thought but I think this campus NEEDS summer. Currently am watching Happy Feet with some volleyball girls and we have decided that Disney movies are getting scarier and scarier! What happened to the fun, cute, carefree Disney movies?! You may not know what we are talking about and if you have not seen Happy Feet, Mumble is really cute and you should probably go out and see it, but know that the seal is very, very scary! Have a good week! Thank you Mom! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Quite a good feeling... Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007 11:33:43 PM
So our games this weekend went, we'll call it OK. They went alright, we lost both but we did try out new formations and are tossing people are in different positions to see what will work the best. After all, that is what spring season is for, right? In our second game against Saint Louis however, guess what happened? Yeah, I actually scored my first collegiate goal!!! I know I know, we never though it would happen but it did. So it happened something like this....Jodi recieved the ball on the left side, a great service from the defense, and brought the player toward her. Being the offensive center mid, I made my run (thank you Bobby, who had told me what 10 seconds before to start making runs..turns out listening to Bobby actually helps once in a while..amazing I know!) But anywho, made a run to her left down the centerish of the field. Jodi played the ball at the right time in front of me, into the 18 and the keeper so nicely came out to get the ball. Unknown to her, I was faster than she and got to the ball first, wound up my left foot, and chipped her, sending the ball right underneath the crossbar. Afterward, because of my lack of coordination sometimes, I continued to fall pretty much onto my face. It was all worth it though. Nothing beats that feeling of the first goal. I still remember my first high school goal and I am sure that I will remember this one. That feeling of wanting to jump for joy and cry at the same time but than you would kind of look like a dork so you act like it is all cool inside and it is just something that happens everyday. Which it is, I mean how many times do we score in practice? Something about that goal though, nothing can beat that feeling. The one thing I wish was that my mom was there, she has always been there for my games and not having her at these is a hard thing but the joy in her voice when I called her and told her after the game was enough for me. I hope everyone is enjoying the first part of this week. After this Easter weekend, we have 3 weeks left!! So exciting. We play UK tomorrow at UK, should be kind of fun, interestingly fun. Enjoy your week and you'll be updated with our amazingness that will happen tomorrow! THANK YOU MOM! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Rain, rain go away Sunday, April 1st, 2007 11:21:44 AM
We had our first M League games yesterday, very interesting. Having never participated in M League before, game day was an experience as both of my 4 and 5 year old teams played one another. We have a few things to learn, the basics of keeping the ball on the field and not picking up the ball when things get a little tough, but all in all they left with smiles on their faces and were looking forward to practice again this week so no complaints from me! One little girl brought me a brown bag decorated as a penguin with two apples in it...so ADORABLE! The other girls seemed to enjoy their teams as we have many talented young ones in Oxford and surrounding areas. We are in Evansville as I type, getting ready for our two games today against Evansville (shocker!) and St. Louis University. I am excited because a. they are games and we all love games and they are against good teams and b. one of my good friends from high school is on SLU. It is always fun to see people you know. Still getting used to having very few subs, since this fall we had so many, but it is overall a good thing. It rained, no poured all the way to Evansville yesterday and stormed last night, so hopefully today the field is not under water! Wish us luck and I will keep you posted as to how we do!! THANK YOU MOM! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
IT'S SO NICE OUTSIDE Tuesday, March 27th, 2007 07:39:28 PM
In Oxford, Ohio today, it was 83 degrees and sunny (with no chance of meatballs). The volleyball players that call themselves Hallie Hanks and Megan Griffin are currently sitting outside with me and a couple other soccer players. We have made a tradition basically out of sitting outside and doing homework...'doing homework'. I cannot believe that we are sitting outside at 7:30 at night. Gilmore Girls is on tonight, but other than that I think the night is just focused on homework. We had the beginning of M League today, which is our league of young children ranging in age from 3 or 4 to 9, boys and girls. We coach them on either Tuesdays or Thursdays and games are on Saturdays. I am assigned to a 4 and 5 year old girls team and I must say they are some of the cutest girls I know. I have a team of six, which makes it some what awkward to run drills, but luckily Cara B. also has a 4 and 5 year old team so we combined for most of the practice, running obstacle courses, simple dribbling drills, all of that jazz. I do not think I have a voice anymore, but they are cute AND they have smaller feet than I do so it is all OK with me. Our games this weekend went better than expected I think. We lost both, which is never good, but we played really really well as a team and we are finally playing for each other, which is amazing and a good change from years past. This team, if I do say so myself, has great potential. We play Evansville and SLU this weekend, at Evansville. Game times are at 1 and 4. We leave Saturday and return to Miami on Sunday evening. I hope your week is off to a good start and posts will be updated shortly, later this week! THANK YOU MOM! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
The week from the abyss...is finally over! Friday, March 23rd, 2007 11:18:09 PM
After many long nights for everyone on the soccer team due to homework and deadlines, the start of practice again, and the unfortune of being back from sunny spring breaks, the weekend is finally here! However, the weekend for the Women's Soccer team at Miami will be unlike many recently. For tomorrow, we leave at 8am for Purdue to play Purdue and Wisconsin-Madison in a little indoor tournament. We all will start the day with a breakfast at Uptown Cafe, at least most of us that like to wake up just a bit early for some amazing food. Our games are scheduled for 1 and 4, I think, and are 60 minutes long. With the unfortunate injury of one of our beautiful defenders, we are forced to show exactly how talented this team actually is! Lucky for Bobby, he has some amazing players that can play anywhere on the field. :) Wish us luck tomorrow! I will keep you posted on exactly how well we do and how sore we are after!! Have a good weekend! Thank you MOM! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Our new best friend...the 10X100 Monday, March 19th, 2007 08:52:13 PM
Today was a lovely day; first thunderstorm with yes one bolt of lightning and one crash of thunder, oh yes the amazing start of homework and school from a week of nothing aka SPRING BREAK!, and who could forget--the return of the fitness test, the 10X100! On top of lifting, which thank you Matt Cady we will all be sore from tomorrow and practice afterward. Now I make it sound like Bobby and Ellen asked us to save the world while attending school, doing homework, and all in time to run the fitness test, OK it is true (only kidding). Do not get all of this team wrong, we loved the practice and touching the ball again and finally PLAYING! but everything before that...not so lovely! If you are just starting your spring break, we are jealous, if you are a week from spring break, we are jealous, and if you are one of the unlucky few that have had spring break and now you have the memories and the tans; cherish those memories and love the moments (and try not to think too hard about being back in school)! Thank you Mom! P.S. WE HAVE 5 MORE MONDAYS....5 MORE!!! Summer here we come! :) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
les Vacances! Saturday, March 17th, 2007 03:13:19 PM
Many of you either find your spring break fast approaching with flights to Mexico and Florida and even Colorado, or like most of Miami you find it quickly coming to a close. Home is the place for me this spring break, as I got to spend this entire week with my family; my mom and brother, Ryan, friends from home and lets not forget the 20 inches of snow that I landed to. Quite an interesting time when you fall asleep taking off in Ohio, green kind of brown I suppose and waking up flying over Minnesota, white as far as the eye can see! Jarman, Pace, Jaclyn Levant, Hardeck, K. Smith, Berkey, Kav, Cara and Howland too are heading home to their respective states. Laser is going water skiing in Georgia with the Miami Water Skiiing Team, I know we did not know we had one for a while there either! The things you learn. D Hays, Court, Jodi, Danielle, Rushie (the mommy of Danielle and Jodi), Stephanie Wilson and some former members of Miami Soccer all head down to Fort Lauderdale, along with most of the population of Miami University. Jill too will be going with some friends to Florida for a little while. This week has been a long one!! Started last Friday, leaving school with Jill and heading to a little cafe and Graeters Ice Cream (way too much ice cream was eaten in a short amount of time) and our Gilmore Girls marathon. I stayed with Jill in Cinnci since my flight back to MN did not leave until Saturday morning. The rest of the weekend was spent shopping, time with the mother and Ryan and the brother of course and just relaxing. Pretty much all week has just been looking at townhomes (we might be moving soon!!) and just hanging out, lots of drives down to St. Paul to see a certain someone (or two!) Today will be spent in preperation to go back to Ohio, doing laundry, packing, maybe a little workout here soon, and of course watching NCAA basketball! I hope you have safe travels, whether it be back home or to the beach, bring and wear lots of sunscreen, and be safe! Thank you Mom! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Soccer Prom 07 Saturday, March 3rd, 2007 10:21:31 PM
Hello again! It has been a while since I have written, and lots has happened. This last Friday, March 2nd, we had what we like to call:OUR SOCCER PROM. We rented out a bar in Uptown, Pachinko's, and filled it to the max by the end of the night. That could be because the bar opened to the public at 11:30 PM or because we are really popular, you take your pick. Boyfriends from all around came up down and over, not mine though thanks to Minnesota snow (I think we are at 20+ inches right now) and the fact that he was not going to come down anyway--it is ok Ryan I still like you I suppose! Laser and I were dates, but not really because we would not want to break team rules (no inner squad dating being one of them!) So therefore, I was technically Jarman and Dan's little child for the night. We went to a house before hand, where I proceeded to break Jaclyn Levant's glass by hitting the bottom of my sobe bottle on the very top of her glass (I did not mean to do this, this is just how events occured). This glass however, did not shatter oh no, it just broke into two, clean pieces, easy to clean up. Do not worry Bobby, Kim, Ellen, Mr. and Mrs. Levant, and Mrs. Carlson aka Mom...no one was hurt! We took a bunch of team pictures and the team collectively decided that we have a good looking soccer team. You ask most people about Division 1 soccer teams and they say that the girls look like men. We however, do not. Dressed up or in sweats, it has been collectively decided that we are a very good looking team. Thanks to Matt Cady, our lifting coach, we do have muscles that were definitely shown off yesterday in all our pretty formal dresses. Today, I spent the day trying to figure out my majors, thanks to journalism I have to double major! So today was spent deciding what classes I need to take and when I need to take them in order to graduate on time. A lot different from high school I am finding. That is all for now! Enjoy the rest of your weekend, your lenten services tomorrow if you so choose, and catching up on homework for the kidlets or work for you grown ups, that was supposed to be done during the weekend, but has somehow managed to make you wait until Sunday to start it! THANK YOU MOM! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Lauren Jarman, what a wonderful phrase Friday, February 23rd, 2007 09:07:19 PM
Lauran Jarman is a wondeful person. She has hazel eyes, big feet, and is very tall. OK, so she is kind of awkward but can you blame her? She is a goalie, and I am not. Therefore, I am the short, little footed, hazel eyed weirdo sitting next to her...and THE PERSON WITH WHOM SHE IS LIVING NEXT YEAR! Anywho... We have a sleep-over in the locker room tomorrow. According to Jax, there is a business side and a fun side. We have been asked to bring an assortment of board games (how old do we sound?). Maybe we will get to play games like we did today in the weight room. Lifting was actually, dare I say it, kind of, sort of FUN? today. Yes, f.....u......n. We had competitions; from pull-ups, to carrying the red plates (the really really big ones) down the room and back, and wall sits while passing more weighted plates back and forth. As I like to say, "We were like 4 year olds playing with heavy weights." Funny how none of us have grown up yet. THANK YOU MOM! Good Night and Good Luck (if you cannot name this movie, we have troubles)! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Weekend of Presidents Tuesday, February 20th, 2007 08:07:04 PM
Roommate selection. Seems like a pretty easy topic. Our problem: the freshman girls of Stephanie Laser, Lauren Jarman, Krista Pace, Sara Howland, Jill Moore, and I cannot make decisions and quite frankly are too close to divide up into groups of two. More like groups of four since the halls that we are living in next year are suite style. That means that there are still two people per room, but there are two rooms connected by our own bathroom, so technically there are four people in what is considered two connected rooms. We select rooms tomorrow, so I suppose we will see what happens tomorrow morning at 9am, you can pray for us tonight. Went home this weekend, was WONDERFUL! I think I am one of the few people here that really love being at home, sleeping in my own bed, shopping with Mom, hanging out with the bro, and yes seeing the boyfriend (Ryan..now you have your name in the blog!). Shopped for actual business casuel clothes with the Madre, quite an odd experience considering I do not really want to grow up and I still read childrens books (I read one as a bedtime story to my roommate Mindy last night). But being home was wonderful, long trip back to Minnesota, but it was wonderful nonetheless. I hope the beinning of your week went well and the rest of it goes smoothly! I promised I'd end all my blogs now with: Thank you Mom since she is the one that has taught me most of what I know!! Therefore, Thank you Mom! Enjoy your week everyone . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Valentines Day blues? NOT FOR US! Thursday, February 15th, 2007 12:11:22 PM
What Valentines Day looks like when you either do not have a significant other, or like Jarman and I, your significant other is between 400 and 800 miles away: Like many girls on Miami's campus, the girls of McFarland Hall flooded the bathroom with make-up, perfume, and steam from the showers that had to be taken for the dates and possible boyfriends. Stephanie Laser, Lauren Jarman, and myself could be found almost sleeping on Jarman's bed..No Valentines dates, no one to look nice for (except for of course ourselves!!), and too tired to even function. Laser has a BMZ (smart girl!) exam to study for (wish her luck I do believe it is tomorrow) and Jarman and I are quite frankly too sore to function or move or do anything for that matter. We somehow muster up the energy to go take showers, where we find our second winds and start to sing the song from Tarzan when the gorillas are in the camp and are banging on pots and all sorts of things, yep that one, and "It's a Small World" (Jarman tells me this is her Mother's favorite ride at Disney). And there were a few other songs in there that I am sure if you were to ask the person that was in there with us, she would know what they were. Note: Do not come near the bathroom when Jarman and I are showering unless you love to hear horrible singing, most likely out of tune, and probably not the right words (and I even sang in Concert Choir for 4 years). We tend to mumble when we don't know the words, and don't even pretend that you have no idea what I am talking about, you know you do it! Well, needless to say we still had fun on Valentines Day, away from our boys and family! Hope your Valentines Day was filled with love and happiness and roses and candy and all that other lovely stuff Valentines Day brings! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
The Deliciousness of Chocolate... Sunday, February 11th, 2007 05:46:14 PM
So it being a lazy Sunday, Lauren Jarman, Stephanie Laser, and myself decided that it would be a wonderful idea that, after getting breakfast at about 1pm this afternoon, to sit down and watch some quality television. We turned on the ever amazing and ever educational Food Network and take a guess what was on...A DAY OF CHOCOLATE! Watching four straight hours of chocolate making and the history of chocolate gave us cravings (Bobby, Kim and Ellen you can stop reading here) and so we opened the Valentines Day gift I recieved from my lovely roommate's parents today. This gift consisted of Snickers Mini's, Dark Chocolate M&M's, and Reeses Peanut Butter Cups. We have yet to make a dent, but than again it is only 5:42 in the early evening. Please note that we did not actually watch four straight hours, Jarman and I took a three hour nap that we will not be happy about later tonight. We will be well rested, however well rested did not get our homework done earlier today and therefore it will need to be done tonight. Enjoy the beginning of your week, stay warm, wear scarves and mittens and hats if you are from Ohio and think that his weather is actually cold outside, and you'll be updated shortly! Good-bye! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Walking In a Winter Wonderland? Tuesday, February 6th, 2007 07:45:14 PM
So it is really not supposed to snow in Oxford, Ohio. If you have ever travelled to the wonderful city that is Miami University, you will realize that we all kind of live in a bubble. As a team, we have learned that it likes to rain during the day, but never when we have practice, and never on the days that we run the 10X100...makes some of us curious of Bobby's ability to control the weather. Ok, not really but that's ok. Nevertheless, to the subject of the Headline-it has snowed about 7 inches today. Krista Pace and I went to the Gross Center, the place where lifting occurs, also where you lovely incoming freshman will take the much needed EDT class (pretty much how to be a student athlete, how to manage your time, all of that loveliness) but anywho, we were sitting outside taking pictures of the football stadium (the Gross overlooks the football stadium) and one of the trainers came out with a ruler to measure how much snow had fallen, so far a good 7 inches!! And it is a pretty snow--excellent for snowball fights and possibly snowman out in the quad. We will see about a Brandon Hall vs. McFarland Hall snowball fight. On a heavier note, class today was horrible for me. I do not know about what your preferences are, but having two exams in one day is just not an exciting time for me. Especially when one of them is in a class that pertains to getting into the major that I want. I tried to bribe someone to take my other exam, my philosophy exam, but it turns out that no one on campus likes philosophy therefore, I had to take it (not really Bobby, do not worry!) We'll just keep our fingers crossed for Thursday when I find out whether or not I did well. Enjoy the rest of your week until I write again. I promise for those of you that are already tuned into this blog and riding on my every word-I will write again this week..maybe even twice if the spirit so moves me! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
Blog, BLOG, blog, BlOg, bLoG Sunday, January 28th, 2007 07:52:22 PM
I suppose this is a test blog/the first blog of its kind, so I am just going to write down exactly what is going on. We all got back from break safe and sound about three weeks ago and we are now lifting and practicing. We lift three times a week, Monday Wednesday and Friday and will be practicing once it warms up a little, but for now, on top of a new semester and getting used to actually doing work again, lifting and running on our own to get back into shape is enough. We are finalizing our spring schedule and we even started this new great point system that none of us are very fond of, but it does seem to make us a bit more focused in the weight room as well as pointing out what tests we need to improve on for this coming spring and fall, so there are some positive aspects to it I suppose—thanks coaching staff! For starters though, my name is Kersta Carlson. I am a freshman this year from Plymouth, Minnesota..a good 12-hour drive/2 hour plane ride away from the lovely city that we live in; Oxford, Ohio. People here are currently experiencing cold weather-no offense to anyone that lives here but 18 degrees ok I suppose is cold, but according to the mother it was about 5 degrees without the wind chill today in Minnesota. It’s days like these that being homesick is non-existent. I am a Journalism/Sociology major, with hopefully photography and maybe English minor. I have a few years to figure it out though. Through the next oh about four years (hint hint Bobby…you have to invite me back to preseason now…I’m writing this blog!!) I will be updating you on the things going on in and around Oxford, what people on the team are experiencing, the college life in general, and of course keeping you updated on what is going on with the soccer team and our experiences throughout spring season. I may even throw in a bit of my own tid-bits about my life too!! Good-bye for now--more posts to come later this week!! Enjoy your Monday, if that is possible! . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
